Steve Lewis graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1971 and from the University of California, Davis School of Law in 1974. He practiced law from January 1975 until his retirement in April 2019. From September 1974 to August 1976, he worked for the Federal Energy Administration (later the Department of Energy) in Washington, D.C., drafting administrative law opinions on the regulation of the petroleum industry. From September 1976 to January 1982, he was an attorney at the San Francisco law firm Long & Levit. In February 1982, he established his own law firm in Sacramento, where he practiced until retirement. While he began and ended his Sacramento practice as a sole practitioner, he had several partners and associates from 1984 through 2013. For most of his career, he focused on representing lawyers and law firms.
In addition to practicing law, Steve Lewis taught approximately 200 continuing education courses for attorneys, primarily on legal ethics and risk management. He also taught Pre-Trial Civil Litigation at McGeorge School of Law for about 15 years and Professional Responsibility (commonly known as Legal Ethics) at UC Berkeley School of Law (formerly Boalt Hall) for approximately five years.
Volunteer Work
Served on the board of Shalom School during the 1980s and 1990s, including two years as Treasurer and two years as President. As a past president, he remains on the board for life, sharing one vote with other past presidents.
Taught ninth-grade religious school at Congregation B’nai Israel for three years in the 1990s, incorporating monthly volunteer work at Loaves & Fishes.
Served on a rabbinic search committee for Congregation B’nai Israel in the 1990s.
Served as a member, Chair, and later Special Advisor of the California State Bar Committee on Professional Responsibility and Conduct during the 2000s, contributing to the drafting of Formal State Bar Ethics Opinions.
Served for eighteen years on the board of Hillel at Davis and Sacramento (2000s–2020s), including approximately five to six years as Treasurer and two years as President. As a past president, he participates in the Past Presidents’ Council.
Currently serves as a board member and Treasurer of the Margaret Okari Children’s Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization that has supported a boarding school for orphans and at-risk children in Kisii, Kenya, serving over 200 children from pre-K through 8th grade.
Currently serves as co-chair of the Sacramento Pro-Israel Political Network, collaborating with AIPAC to support pro-Israel candidates for the U.S. Congress.
Currently serves as a member and Chair of the Membership Committee of the Jewish Democratic Club of Greater Sacramento, advocating within the California Democratic Party for the values of the Jewish community—including tikkun olam, social equality, justice, and the defense of a democratic, inclusive, secure Israel—as well as for the election of candidates supporting issues important to the Jewish and pro-Israel communities.
